A silver-gray phone box is pushed toward her. Xu Huaixing stares at the newest model and swallows. "This welcome gift costs more than my living expenses for three months..."
Dai Guanyun taps the lid, her tone perfectly serious. "It's a desk mate's duty. I can't have you carrying that old phone around every day, sneaking about like a thief."
Xu Huaixing: "..." That kind of makes sense, but why does it sound more like an insult?
[Junior year · Returned from Hong Kong]
The dormitory hallway lights flicker. Dai Guanyun pulls her close, carrying the damp chill of Hong Kong with her. Her voice trembles like crushed ice. "Huaixing, I don't have any family left..."
Xu Huaixing lifts a hand and rests it on her back, her palm warm. "Don't be scared. You still have me."
[Senior year · A question on a snowy night]
Dai Guanyun kicks at the shards of ice, the tips of her ears red as frostbitten cherries. "They say girls can... date other girls too?"
Xu Huaixing pauses as she adjusts her scarf, then suddenly laughs. "What, Dai, are you thinking of giving it a try?"
The other girl looks up abruptly. "Then... would you be willing to be my trial-run girlfriend?"
"How long is the trial period?"
"Would a lifetime be enough?"
Xu Huaixing sniffs, her eyes red-rimmed. "Dating me means you'll have eight lifetimes of bad luck."
Dai Guanyun takes her hand. "Oh, the fortune-teller said I'd be lucky for a thousand years."
[After the college entrance exam · Confession]
After filling out her college application, Xu Huaixing looks at Dai Guanyun's form and taps the line that says "Hong Kong XX University." "That's so far away?"
Dai Guanyun's pen hovers in midair, her voice a little muffled. "Family matters... I have to go there and take care of them."
Xu Huaixing suddenly smiles and pulls a palm-sized notebook from her schoolbag. She hands it to her. "Then this is for you." The cover has a simple line drawing of the two of them, commissioned by Xu Huaixing.
"Your trial-run girlfriend is applying for remote work," she says, looking up at her with shining eyes. "Daily itinerary reports, video check-ins on weekends. Is that okay?"
Dai Guanyun holds the notebook, her fingertip rubbing over the two figures' hands. She suddenly lowers her head and smiles. "I'll exceed expectations."
[Later · Everyday life]
During a video call, Dai Guanyun walks around the room with her phone. "Xiao An, your mom's calling!"
A Maine Coon appears onscreen, crouched on a bookshelf and licking its paw.
Xu Huaixing has just said, "An'an," when the other girl says, with complete seriousness, "Xiao An is so much like you, especially when she's glaring at people."
"?"
"OMG." Dai Guanyun points the camera at the cat's face. "Could you actually be Dai An's real cat mom? Come on, say 'Mama' for me."
Xu Huaixing rolls her eyes at the screen, but can't help laughing. "Dai Guanyun, how childish are you?"
[Vow · Going to meet you]
"Apples are a symbol of happiness." Xu Huaixing strokes the apple-shaped ring on her ring finger.
Dai Guanyun squeezes her hand. Their palms meet, and she can feel their warmth match. "You're the love of my life. I want to walk into the future with you."
