Having run away from home, Hanayama-in Uguisu arrives at his grandmother's house in Miyagi Prefecture in a pitiful state.
Hanayama-in finally breaks away from his family in his second year of high school and transfers from a prestigious school in Tokyo to Aoba Johsai, a rural school far from the city in Miyagi Prefecture.
The haughty volleyball prodigy Hanayama-in has little regard for this obscure country school that has never made it to nationals.
But since his grandmother can only get him into this school at short notice, Hanayama-in has nowhere else to go. Reluctantly, he joins the boys' volleyball team at this little-known school.
On his first day with the team, the self-proclaimed genius Hanayama-in challenges Aoba Johsai's current captain and team ace:
"I'm a volleyball genius. Make me the starting setter."
Oikawa Toru: ???
On his second day with the team, the self-proclaimed genius Hanayama-in challenges Aoba Johsai's current vice-captain:
"I'm a volleyball genius. Make me the starting ace and outside hitter."
Iwaizumi Hajime: ???
On his third day with the team, the self-proclaimed genius Hanayama-in challenges a third-year middle blocker:
"I'm a volleyball genius. Make me the top starting middle blocker."
Matsukawa Issei: ???
On his fourth day with the team, the self-proclaimed genius Hanayama-in challenges the libero in his year:
"I'm a volleyball genius. Make me the starting libero."
Oikawa/Iwaizumi/Matsukawa: !!!
No way!
You're a volleyball genius, so stay right here and be our ACE!!!
A great tree is what offers a place to rest for little Uguisu, soaked by the rain.
