A reserved, aloof top student vs. a quirky little ray of sunshine
For seventeen years, Ye Pei's life had been bland, quiet, and numb. Every day, he repeated the same routine between school, cram school, and home.
Then, on the first day of his senior-year transfer, he met his new deskmate.
Her arrival was like a pebble dropped into his still heart, sending ripples through it.
He greedily savored the life she brought to his days, hoping only that he could stay with her a little longer, preferably for the rest of his life.
"Deskmate, I haven't done my math homework yet. Be a dear and let me copy yours, okay?"
"Hey, deskmate, I forgot my pen. Can you lend me one?"
"Ye Pei, which answer is this? Could you teach me?"
"Pei Pei, I know you're the best. Just say yes, okay?"
Her pet names grew more and more affectionate, and Ye Pei's heart beat faster and faster.
"Zhaozhao, go to the same university as me."
I don't want to be just your deskmate. I want to...
"Sure. Then we can keep sitting together."
But their promise was broken just before the college entrance exams.
"I'm sorry, Zhaozhao. I'm going to university abroad. Good luck on your exams, and I hope everything goes well." Ye Pei left behind a note and hurried away.
They met again seven years later. Ye Pei had become her client, but she treated him like a stranger, cold and distant. This time, though, he didn't want to let go again.
At last, one day, Ye Pei gathered the courage to confess:
"Zhaozhao, could you please pay attention to me? I'm going crazy without you."
Little did he know that his name, Ye Pei, had been engraved in her heart seven years earlier.
