Zhang Kan is the most dedicated career climber in the dynasty. He placed third in the palace examinations at the age of twenty and is famous throughout the realm. Thanks to his unyielding nature and fierce pride, along with the affection of his imperial uncle, he made the ranks of the "lone loyalists" and "upright ministers." Before turning thirty, he was sent out to Tongzhou as its governor, an honor without precedent.
On his first night in office, he encounters a female hero fighting off a crowd and gets arrested for brawling in public.
Little does he know that a string of murder cases will follow, dragging him into events beyond his control. After decades of smooth sailing, decades of suffering await.
