When Wen Ci, a piano prodigy, meets transfer student Lu Xu during the rainy season of high school, she thinks she has found the most passionate chord of her life. He is a dazzling star on the basketball court, yet on rainy days he always hides outside the music room to listen to her play. Together, they forge their parents' signatures to enter a competition, share their first kiss in the piano room on a rainy night, and promise to go to Vienna together after graduation. Then Lu Xu's father forcibly sends him abroad for treatment for his knee injury. All he leaves behind is a rain-soaked letter, its blurred handwriting spelling out: "Wait for me."
Three years later, Wen Ci wins an international piano competition and sends one last text to the number that has long been disconnected: "The competition is over. Can I come back?" At that very moment, Lu Xu is sitting in a wheelchair at a rehabilitation center, staring at the wedding invitation that has appeared on his phone. The bride is Wen Ci, and the groom is Jiang Jiashu from the literature department.
Central Emotional Themes
- The ache of first love: Lu Xu sneaks into Wen Ci's wedding. Beneath a plane tree, he suffers a trembling episode, but never lets her see his tears.
- The tenderness of healing: Jiang Jiashu burns the medical records Lu Xu sent, carves "rain just in time" into every umbrella handle, and waits a lifetime for the rain to stop.
- The growing pains of coming of age: From the rainy season at seventeen to clear skies at twenty-seven, the story of these three teaches us that some loves are destined to be missed, while some missed chances will eventually become the chords of our lives.
Memorable Scenes
- At the wedding, Lu Xu carves the initials "L.X. & W.C." into the armrest of his wheelchair, then slowly scratches them away himself.
- When Wen Ci teaches her daughter piano, she always pauses at the seventh measure: "This F-sharp needs to be played with more weight."
- In a drawer in Jiang Jiashu's study, every discarded draft of Wen Ci's Rain Traces sheet music is carefully preserved.
