Cheng Jin, eighteen, is a high school senior who has given up on trying. Her motto in life is, "If I can lie down, I won't sit up." Then one day, a System calling itself [World Consciousness] shows up and tells her:
"Congratulations! Your world is a comic, and you're just a background character."
Cheng Jin: "...Sure."
System: "Want to defy fate and change your life? Sign this contract, and you can exchange popularity points directly for cash. Getting rich legally is no dream!"
Cheng Jin: "I'll have to pass."
System: "One-to-one after tax, with no upper limit."
Cheng Jin: "Hand me the pen."
And so she teams up with another unlucky pick, Luo Wangyi (24, office worker, so poor he's eating dirt), and sets off on a path to turn her fate around in a dark world of supernatural powers, by "building a character, riding the plot, and boosting her presence."
He's the mysterious envoy of "Reincarnation," in a black trench coat with a silver pocket watch, a bottomless abyss hidden behind his smile.
She's the languid, world-weary embodiment of "Ending," her white dress stained with twilight, threads of fate twining around her fingertips.
Together, they put on a show of "loving and killing each other," making the comic's forum go wild with shipping: "When are these gorgeous villains joining the main cast?!"
Until one day, they wreck the second loop of the original comic's male lead, Shi Yu, who had traveled back in time.
Shi Yu (breaking down): "Where did you two even come from?!"
Cheng Jin (blowing a bubble): "Just passing through. Saved you while we were at it. Pay up."
Luo Wangyi (holding out a contract): "Hey, want to join Ming Tan?"
The survival rule for Background Characters A and B: Make your character outrageous enough, and the plot has to follow your lead!
[Reader's Guide]
1. Goofy with a dark edge. The protagonists pull off one wild stunt after another. The world includes eerie and Lovecraftian elements, but they won't be described in excessive detail.
2. Not a conventional story about saving the world. These two fun-loving schemers focus on their own ambitions and save the world now and then.
3. Fake villain setup. They have maximum presence in public and roast each other in private.
4. The male and female leads have no romantic pairing. Ship them or self-insert if you like, but the original comic's male lead is absolutely doomed to be single! The original comic has a trio as its main team!
Premise: Even a background character can become a top-tier star!
