Different main and alternate identities / testing each other / deliberately getting close
Most of the characters in this book come from the Classic of Mountains and Seas.
The male and female leads both have their main identities sealed away, and roam the world in their alternate forms.
Tens of thousands of years ago, during the great battle between the gods and the Blood Fiends, the daughter of Emperor Jiu of the gods (main identity) and Dijiang of the Blood Fiend clan (main identity) both vanished from the world. Emperor Jiu's soul fragments scattered across the world, while Dijiang was sealed away.
Ten thousand years later, neither of them remembers their main identity. But Le Yan knows she is an alternate form, and must find all the scattered soul fragments to awaken her main identity and uncover who orchestrated the great battle.
When Le Yan first meets Ze Yu (alternate form), she recognizes him. The two deliberately draw close to each other and set off together.
As Ze Yu uncovers Le Yan's secret, he discovers that she is closely connected to the great battle between the gods and the Blood Fiends. The spirit of her sword seems to be involved as well.
A mysterious figure in gray attacks them several times. Le Yan uses him to find the first soul fragment.
Someone close to her, who has been by her side since childhood, actually wants her dead. The two save each other time and again as their story takes them through the Dike Kingdom, Luan Shui, Hunxi Mountain, the Yanhuo Kingdom, Kunlun Mountain, the sacred valley of the Dragon Clan, and many other places.
As the soul fragments gather, the truth behind the great battle between the gods and the Blood Fiends gradually comes to light, and the secrets behind it surface. Ze Yu's memories begin to return. They find friends along the way and unmask the one who orchestrated the battle all those years ago.
Not all ancient gods are compassionate and benevolent. If a mortal has compassion in their heart, loves all people, and pities all living beings, they too can be called a god.
With all the soul fragments reunited, the fog lifts. They break free of their shackles and become lovers at last!
