Tao Taojiao first met Lan Jiangning at a club event.
He wore a simple white T-shirt, with a kitten curled up by his feet, and stood lost in thought beneath the trees.
But the students around her were all crowded together, buzzing with excitement, and she couldn't get a clear look at him.
All she saw from the corner of her eye was a blurry yet striking figure.
Before long, the organizer called her away, and she didn't get another chance to see him before the event ended.
Later, she happened to learn his name. She also found out that he was a handsome guy whose "Add Me" settings only allowed QR codes, and who never added strangers.
She thought that distant glimpse would be their only connection. Then, that very evening, she received a WeChat friend request:
"Hello, Tao. I'm Lan Jiangning from the Jiujiang campus."

Lan Jiangning was taking part in a volunteer event.
It was so hot in September you could fry an egg on the ground. Not everyone had arrived yet, so he stood in the shade, drowsily lost in thought.
Then, for a moment, he caught the scent of summer grapes, fresh and crisp, yet sweet from the heat.
Wrapped in that grape fragrance, he looked up.
There were so many people, but somehow he knew the scent belonged to the girl in the distance beneath a pink-and-green parasol.
She seemed popular, with people crowding around her.
He didn't know what someone beside her had said, but she smiled, her eyes curving into crescents.
A moment before their eyes met, he inexplicably looked away, flustered.
But the corner of his eye was filled with green.
Amid the noisy crowd, he heard someone call her name: Tao Taojiao.
