Because Peder was born with red hair, he was bullied relentlessly. He thought he had found a kind-hearted nobleman in Pulle.
Pulle generously gave him everything he wanted, yet obsessively controlled every part of his life.
He was nothing but a pet the nobleman had taken in on a whim.
So he took his revenge on Pulle in the cruelest way possible, stripping the arrogant nobleman of everything.
And he became a leading botanist of his generation.
The fallen Pulle watched him shine, and the little affection left in his heart turned to hatred.
So Pulle destroyed him. He fell from grace and ended up back in Pulle's hands.
The two tormented and entangled each other.
Because they hated each other so much, they kept dragging each other deeper into ruin.
In the end, they were left with nothing.
They fell into depravity through evil, and became ugly through evil.
Background:
1. The country is an absolute monarchy. The nobility controls land and political power, while a rising capitalist class emerges, including merchants and educated professionals.
2. The nobility is held in high esteem, much to the resentment of the rising capitalist class, so workers' uprisings are common.
3. Society is strictly stratified: nobility > rising capitalist class > commoners.
