[Blurb needs a complete rewrite]
Sang Shuang is a dream editor of extraordinary talent. His strict adherence to rules and ruthless way of doing things have made the entire Dream Management Bureau wary of him, including the senior administrators.
They resent him, but can't find a way to keep him in check.
Then, during a low-level mission, Sang Shuang mistakes Nie Genan, a rookie who just joined the team, for the protagonist of the dream and tries to flirt with him.
As luck would have it, Nie Genan is a fearless, upright young man. With a loud thud, he brings a mallet down on Sang Shuang, who is playing the villain.
Everyone present, including the dream's protagonist, freezes.
They think Nie Genan is about to be fired on the spot. But Sang Shuang merely grits his teeth and says, "Do your job properly. Don't disrupt the order," as Nie Genan, coming to his senses, smoothly drops to his knees.
.
After the incident, the senior administrators act as if they've struck gold and discovered Sang Shuang's weakness. Whenever they need him on a mission, they plant the little "rookie" at his side, claiming, "The new guy has a lot of potential and needs advanced training."
They also give everyone the impression that Nie Genan has some special connection to the higher-ups.
Sang Shuang sees right through it but doesn't say a word. "Fine. Let's see how many missions luck lets him survive."
Nie Genan, the little "rookie" with barely F-rank abilities, a knack for forcing his way into missions above his level, and the natural misfortune of a jinx: ...
.
But things gradually start to take a strange turn.
Their original plan was for Sang Shuang to let Nie Genan act recklessly, then get demoted by the Bureau for neglecting the safety of his staff.
But in reality, Sang Shuang, who had never once bent the rules, made an exception to rescue Nie Genan when the dream's protagonist beat him up during a mission.
He violated protocol to pause the dream when Nie Genan triggered a hidden setting.
And when Nie Genan fell into a dream swamp, he did everything he could to lift the unconscious man above the water, begging him, "Don't die..."
When the senior administrators replayed the footage and saw the pair standing far closer than any professional distance required, they all fell into thought.
We're doomed. It looks like our scheme backfired.
We're doomed. Nie Genan really has become a special case.
Wait, did we get the pairings backwards?
