The Marquis of Yongyi and the Marquis of Wude, both residents of Yongning Alley, are sworn enemies who trade barbs to each other's faces and stab each other in the back in secret.
The third young lady of the Marquis of Yongyi's household, Xie Baozhu, is arrogant and domineering. The eldest son of the Marquis of Wude, Pei Langyu, is vicious and ruthless. They are infamous throughout the capital as a pair of miscreants.
One day, Xie Baozhu rents a flower boat to drink and carouse, while upstairs Pei Langyu rolls dice and shouts for his bets.
Then their families come to catch them. In their haste, Xie Baozhu and Pei Langyu leap out the window to escape, only to run into each other by chance.
As they flee, they don't forget to shout loudly and give each other away, each trying to trip the other up.
But they never imagined that, having done so much wickedness, they had made too many enemies. They are both knocked unconscious and tossed onto the same bed.
The two marquises rush into the pleasure house and see the dreadful scene before them: clothes scattered across the floor, screams rising one after another inside.
With no other choice, they have the pair bound and married to protect their families' reputations.
Everyone in the capital says that after their wedding, Third Miss Xie and Eldest Young Master Pei will make each other's lives hell and come to blows.
After the wedding, Xie Baozhu and Pei Langyu have no choice but to pretend to be a loving couple to appease their elders.
They embark on a spectacular life of putting on an act in public and bickering and fighting in private.
Under pressure from their elders, they agree to divorce after three years.
From then on, Xie Baozhu watches the show while Pei Langyu sets the stage.
Pei Langyu fights, and Xie Baozhu hands him a knife.
All in all, their days are quite harmonious.
Except for that accident after drinking.
That night, the two end up in the same bed, but afterward they tacitly agree not to mention it.
In the blink of an eye, the agreed date for their divorce arrives.
Xie Baozhu plans to pack her things and go home, but feels as if something is missing.
Pei Langyu clutches the hem of her clothes, his eyes red. “Didn't you always want to become a First-Rank Lady? Your husband will earn that title for you. Please don't leave, all right?”
Instead of seeing the two part ways for good, everyone watches as Pei Langyu fights his way up with a spear in hand and becomes a trusted minister to the Crown Prince, while Xie Baozhu coasts along and also earns the title of First-Rank Lady.
A story about two miscreants who love setting traps for each other after marriage, only to find themselves bound together for good.
