In 1912, to escape the turmoil, eighteen-year-old Sagudaji Lan, a Manchu aristocrat, cut off his queue, packed his belongings, and set out from Beijing to seek refuge with his uncle in the distant northeast. But fate had other plans. His carriage was traveling along just fine, eating hotpot and singing songs, when bandits robbed him!
The legendary bandit chief "Wanshan Xue" stood eight chi tall, with a fearsome face. Soon after forming his gang, he defeated three notorious veteran bandit leaders nearby and became a tyrant of the Northeast. To survive under Wanshan Xue, Jilan had no choice but to feign compliance and infiltrate the vicious bandits' den. He infiltrated it so successfully that he almost became the chief's wife, taking the nickname "Snowy Red."
When they met again years later, it was in the dead of night on a winter's day. He had gotten dead drunk with his rowdy friends. After they parted, he stumbled alone through a narrow alley, one foot sinking deeper than the other, when a pitch-black gun barrel pressed against the back of his head.
He smiled and raised his hands, hearing the low, familiar voice of the person behind him.
"You left without pulling the incense stick."
He smiled quietly. Suddenly, two streams of tears ran down his face, then turned cold in the north wind.
"Turn around. I never shoot people in the back."
He turned around with his hands still raised, already in tears though he didn't know when they had begun, and closed his eyes before the black barrel.
Instead of the pain of a wood-fuel bullet or the sting of a blade, a burning body fell into his arms. He carried him all the way home, taking one deep, uneven step after another. Laughing and crying like a madman, he murmured:
"Boss... We have a home... We're going home..."
