Lu Heqing began studying metaphysics at the age of eight. He mastered feng shui, divination, fortune-telling, talismans, and seal crafting, and was exceptionally gifted. Yet despite his extraordinary abilities, he went on to earn a master's and doctorate before becoming a university lecturer, devoting himself to research.
Recently, the teacher who taught him metaphysics suddenly disappeared, and supernatural incidents began occurring around him with increasing frequency. He had no choice but to get drawn into one bizarre case after another, where he met Qin Yuan, captain of the Order Administration Bureau's investigation team.
Captain Qin glows with a dazzling aura of merit. Though he should be overflowing with yang energy, he can come into contact with all kinds of yin objects without difficulty. Even Lu Heqing cannot read his destiny chart.
Is he a person chosen by fate, or someone fate cannot abide?
At their first meeting, the righteous, atheist Qin Yuan said, "Teacher Lu, your university needs to do more to promote scientific thinking."
But after investigating several supernatural cases, Qin Yuan sought Lu Heqing out and invited him to serve as a consultant for the Paranormal Investigation Team. His tone was solemn: "It's a government job, with excellent benefits."
Then, in a moment of crisis, Lu Heqing set up a ghost-summoning array and accidentally called forth the chief judge among the clerks and magistrates of the underworld.
But why did this imposing judge, clad in black and surrounded by ghostly energy, have exactly the same face as Captain Qin?
The face Lu Heqing remembered as always stern and cold now wore a thoroughly wicked smile. The man bowed with a show of impeccable manners. "It would be my honor to serve a beauty."

Reading guide:
1. A seemingly gentle, jade-like shou who is actually clear about love and hate x a morally exemplary human and an amoral, dark, deranged, righteous-yet-evil gong from the underworld. One-on-one, both pure.
2. The metaphysical elements draw on many books and sources, but include plenty of original inventions. The made-up parts aren't meant to be taken as fact.
3. The gong is sort of split into two parts early on, but only two. They'll merge later, since they were the same person all along.
Theme: What goes around comes around, and good and evil are repaid in kind
