The shou and the gong have been sworn rivals since childhood, growing up competing with each other and never seeing eye to eye.
Then one day, they transmigrate and become a newlywed couple, only to find themselves dirt poor and completely dumbfounded.
Their old habits carry over from their past lives, and they keep pushing themselves to the limit and trying to outdo each other.
The shou gloats:
"Keep it up, you can do it. Just two more mu of land to dig up."
"A real man can't chop just ten bundles of firewood in a day. You have to chop a hundred."
"Put your back into it! What, did you skip a meal?"
The gong is sharp-tongued and cutting:
"Not bad. Your cooking has finally become a little more appetizing than pig feed."
"I only had one decent pair of pants, and you sewed them into capris. Thanks for not turning them into shorts."
"I admit you have lofty ambitions about becoming the king of chicken farming, but how are your roosters supposed to lay eggs?"
Their days of giving as good as they got were chaotic, with one disaster after another.
Eventually, they realized things couldn't go on like this and decided to make peace.
When they were at their poorest, they fought over a single egg. But when the shou fell ill, the gong would order him through red-rimmed eyes not to die, then sell everything he owned to pay for treatment.
Even when times were hard and money was tight, the shou never withheld the gong's tuition. He told him, "You're the man who can stand up to me. You're bound to make something of yourself."
Together, they supported each other in this unfamiliar world,
climbing step by step from a small village to a county town, then to the provincial capital and the capital city.
They learned what it meant to fall in love and cherish each other, and had an adorable little one.
They may be sworn rivals by name, but in truth, they're each other's dearest person.
