Across the realms of humans, demons, and ghosts, there was one name everyone knew: Zhou Ling.
At fourteen, this young woman from an immortal sect took first place on the Sword Trial ranking. At fifteen, she slew an ancient demon serpent all by herself. The name Zhou Ling of Buxun Mountain rang throughout the world.
One terrifying great demon after another lost its life beneath her sword. But in a single fall from the clouds, Zhou Ling became nothing more than a lazy salted fish lying belly-up in the marketplace.
-
When civil war broke out in the demon realm, Zhou Ling raised her sword to protect her companions, but a surge of poisonous mist engulfed her in an instant.
When she woke, a crowd had gathered around her. The venerable elders treated her like a daughter, and the leader of the Immortal Alliance even proposed to her on the spot.
Zhou Ling let all these good things go in one ear and out the other.
Her mind was stuck on the three fingers raised by a master of pharmacology: "You've been poisoned. You'll live to thirty-three at most."
-
After being poisoned, Zhou Ling spent her days wandering around. She helped the people catch demons that stole their livestock, chased away ghosts that gave children nightmares, and sealed a few wandering corpses on the road.
When there was truly nothing to do, she'd go drinking with young swordsmen just starting out. Once drunk, she'd find a street corner and bask in the warm sun.
Everyone who saw her said the same thing:
"How did you end up living like this?"
Zhou Ling thought that she only had ten years left, so she might as well do whatever made her comfortable.
-
Her first twenty years had been glorious, but exhausting.
After the poison forced her to set down her burdens, she was actually happier.
Zhou Ling had thought she could spend her short life in comfort like this.
Until one day, she took in a disciple.
Having a disciple was great. Hers was handsome and talented.
Later, the barrier sealing the four divine weapons in the demon realm collapsed.
So what if it collapsed? Just don't let it fall on me.
Zhou Ling, who had resolved to stay a salted fish to the very end, realized the barrier really had collapsed right on top of her.
The people she had cared for while living as a salted fish, the people who chased after her calling her Immortal Lord or Sister, died horribly in the disaster caused by the divine weapons appearing in the world.
Zhou Ling: Fine. I haven't died yet, so I might as well fix the barrier.
-
And so Zhou Ling began the exhausting journey of repairing the realm while raising her disciple.
At first, she thought that although the broken barriers were a pain to deal with, at least her disciple was easy on the eyes and no trouble at all.
But little by little, her disciple became a handful too.
After going through life and death together again and again, she watched her lovely, pure-hearted disciple gradually turn into a yandere.
He got jealous. He got angry. He schemed in the shadows against anyone who came near Zhou Ling. Most of all, he was an ungrateful traitor to his master who couldn't stop telling lies.
...Zhou Ling could put up with it, really. She was going to die soon, and she didn't have high expectations for her disciple.
But she hadn't pulled him back from the brink of death so she could hear him open his eyes and say he wanted to sleep with her!
-
Every day, Zhou Ling calculated how much longer she had to live.
She was afraid that if she lived much longer, she wouldn't be able to resist saying yes to him.
