"I am your lover, billions of light-years away."
One day in 2307, Professor Qi of Huacheng's top-level research institute announced to the media the time-travel machine he had spent seven years building with his team. He also displayed his own body, healthy and intact after returning from his journey through time.
People rejoiced over this major research achievement. Whether this technology could ever be used in ordinary households remained an open question, but it was certainly enough for the Central Institute of Science and Technology to boast about for a while.
With some free time, Chu Yun read two papers on gene editing in Nature and its related journals. Looking around at all the tasks in his lab that had been put on hold, he felt inexplicably unsettled. Something seemed wrong, but he couldn't figure out why. He picked up his phone and called a physics professor, hoping he could help check whether there was a problem with his algorithmic model.
When the call connected, Chu Yun spoke first.
"Hello, Professor Qi."
The other person fell silent for a moment. Only after Chu Yun spoke again did a voice come through, sounding somewhat delighted.
"Long time no see, Professor Chu."
Oh, right. Long time no see.
