[Brooding, unhinged ghost master top x resilient, optimistic little-sunshine disciple bottom]
Shen Yan'an has had that same nightmare again.
Hellfire scorches the sky, chains pierce to the bone, and a blurred figure clutches him tightly in the flames, repeating the same words again and again.
"Shen Yan'an... You can't escape, "
"My good disciple, didn't you promise to be buried with me? Come..."
Shen Yan'an is shaken and uneasy. Following a fortune-teller's guidance, he joins the foremost immortal sect, the Tianyan Sect.
In the vast halls and towers of the immortal mountain, everyone is revered, yet Shen Yan'an is the only disciple they've taken in.
Before Shen Yan'an can celebrate his incredible good fortune, all sorts of strange things begin to happen.
The dining hall is clearly empty, yet a faint, gloomy chuckle keeps reaching his ears.
"Eat some more. Isn't this your favorite?"
The doors and windows of his bedroom are clearly locked, yet it always seems someone is standing beside him, watching him all night with a cold, clinging gaze.
But when he opens his eyes, all he sees is his refined and dignified master seated at the tea table. Half his face turns toward him in the candlelight, a smile on his lips. "Did you have a nightmare? Don't be afraid. Your master is here."
In less than half a month, Shen Yan'an's unease grows ever stronger.
Why does the senior brother at the mountain gate always wear the same expression and say the same few lines?
Why, when he goes down the mountain to gather supplies, does an old Daoist see him and exclaim in horror that he is surrounded by a thick aura of ghosts?
The sect is full of life, yet at the same time, it feels lifeless.
As if
he is the only living person in the entire sect.
Then one day, terrified out of his wits, Shen Yan'an ignores the rules and rushes into his master's room for the first time in broad daylight.
There is no sign of his master meditating in seclusion.
All he sees are pictures of himself covering the walls, and a conspicuous spirit tablet in the center of the room.
The vermilion characters on the tablet are bright and striking
"In memory of my wife, Shen Yan'an."
Shen Yan'an's scalp goes numb. Just as he turns to flee, his usually doting, protective, gentle and warm master freezes him in place with a chilling smile.
"Oh, my good disciple has found out."
