Dual Lineage

Zhu Tangying unexpectedly transmigrates into an imperial examination novel called Two Households, becoming the supporting female character whose fiancé has died and who is to marry her fiancé's cousin.

In the original story:

After his cousin dies, the male lead, Lu Yuncheng, marries his cousin's fiancée and takes on the duty of carrying on the family lines of both households. While studying for the imperial examinations, he balances his relationship with his two wives, steadily rising through the ranks until he earns an official title. His taking responsibility for both households becomes a celebrated tale.

Zhu Tangying resents the harmony between the male and female leads. She is constantly jealous, fighting over the family fortune, the man, and an official title for women. In the end, she gets nothing and is sent back to her hometown, where she freezes to death in misery.

When Zhu Tangying transmigrates, her fiancé has just died, and her family members take turns urging her to marry into his family.

Zhu Tangying decides to make full use of the supporting character's tendency to cause trouble, hoping to make the Lu family back down.

When the Lu family comes to discuss the marriage, she readily agrees: I can marry him, but first divorce Zheng Guiru. I want to enter the family first, and I want ten times the betrothal gifts, with ten carriages! I'll walk beneath ten horses and come out without a scratch!

A little scene:

Years later, Lu Yuncheng fails the imperial examinations. While wandering around the capital, he sees Zhu Tangying and Zheng Guiru.

They have just come out of a jewelry shop, and a servant is loading their purchases onto a carriage.

He is about to approach when two men come over. One takes Zhu Tangying by the hand. Lu Yuncheng remembers him: the Grand Preceptor's grandson and this year's top candidate in the civil examinations.

The other speaks gently to Zheng Guiru and does whatever she asks. Lu Yuncheng recognizes him too: this year's top candidate in the military examinations.

Later on, even when Lu Yuncheng falls to his knees, he cannot win so much as a glance from either of them.

Qin Shaoqin is out on business and passes through Gaoping, stopping to visit his cousin, who is studying away from home.

He can tell at a glance that Lin Xu feels something special for Miss Zhu. He wants to tell Lin Xu that the Lin family would never allow him to marry her.

But thinking of his own unmentionable feelings, he can't bring himself to say it.
