Synopsis
Red robes as armor, a dry well concealing a blade. This is a breathtaking game of chess played in the name of love.
On the night of the Ming dynasty's founding, a lowborn daughter of the Ming Duke's household is cast aside by her father's clan and sent to Prince Shen's manor to "bring good fortune" to its master. But when she steps through the gates, she is not greeted by blazing wedding candles. Instead, beneath pallid lanterns stands a twisted, solitary crane, while the stench of rot and blood seeps from the moss-covered dry well. In the eyes of the world, this manor is the tomb where the mad, crippled prince is imprisoned. In truth, it is an abyss that devours the living.
Her husband, Prince Shen, Zhao Wuyin:
Seated in a wheelchair, clad in a heavy black robe, handsome as a demon, yet mad and vicious by nature.
Late at night, he grips her by the throat and murmurs with a lover's laugh, "Guess, my beloved consort: after all these years pretending to be crippled, whom have I been waiting for?"
He teaches her the arts of power and intrigue, gives her a poison-coated dagger, and even smiles as he lets her... poison his medicine.
She thinks she is the one moving the pieces: the emperor's blade against the deposed prince, a bridge for her family to climb toward power.
But amid one nerve-racking test after another, she stumbles upon the blood-red moon reflected in a dry well deep within the palace, and glimpses the silent blades hidden behind the vermilion gates and embroidered walls of the great clans: the Xu of Yingchuan, the Zheng of Xingyang, the Feng of Taiyuan...
The great houses scheme against one another at court, while the spring banquets in the imperial harem conceal deadly traps.
She makes ambition her blade, struggling to survive in the whirlpool of power and desire as she maneuvers among her mad husband, noblewomen of the great clans, and titans of the court.
Affection grows wildly amid schemes and suspicion, like poppies blooming in the dark: sweet, yet deadly.
Until that night.
She drives her sword into his chest with her own hands.
His bloodstained fingers brush the corners of her eyes, leaving behind one last touch of tenderness and a curse:
"Chuchu, this dragon throne... I meant to take it for you."
Outside the hall, the new emperor's cries to kill shatter the long night.
Only then does she realize that the poison wine meant to end her life was the wedding cup he had mixed with his own hands.
And the tiger tally, granting command of an army, that lies asleep beneath her pillow was the bloody dowry he prepared for her ten years ago...
