An Unlucky Player and His Rebellious Game
Second-person POV. Everyone gets put through the wringer.
You start trying out a Hunter x Hunter crossover game. Your starting card is a swordsman named "Ling." The opening animation is an awesome swordsmanship duel, with a green-eyed boy wearing the detached, wise expression of a worldly master.
Among a bunch of symbols you can't understand, you choose □□□□, and die in the first second after teleporting.
"Congratulations on unlocking the achievement: Can't Even Survive by Playing It Safe!"
"Congratulations on unlocking the achievement: Reborn the Moment You Land!"
"Congratulations on unlocking the achievement: A Calf Daring to Charge a Tiger!"
You: ...?
After persevering through countless attempts, you, an extraordinarily unlucky player, finally pull your second basic card: "Mireuki Zoldyck." Great, it's a little sister!
You think this card is decent, except there are way too many unskippable scenes, and those Zoldycks just won't leave you alone.
And it seems your terrible acting has given you away.
You obtain the title "A Persistent, Third-Rate Actor." Equip effect: Greatly increases the chance that characters will become suspicious of your identity.
You: ???
This damn game is just as good at mocking people as ever.
You want "Killua," so you try the cosplay card-drawing method, even roping in two classmates to cosplay Killua and Gon!
After tons of effort, your cosplay pulls get you... "Illumi Zoldyck"!
When you see the chance of pulling "Killua" drop by 5% in an instant, you let out a piercing shriek!
"Illumi" works very efficiently, but demands a huge fee every time and keeps an eye on "Mireuki," restricting the little sister from taking dangerous missions.
Furious, with only two fixed high-attack cards in hand, you resent losing your little sister and not being able to pull Killua or Gon. You stop paying him altogether (you're actually broke) and run off with your little sister.
You obtain the title "A Regular on the Zoldyck Wanted List."
You come back to pull cards again and get a story card, "Ten Natsuki." Given the choice between the "Red-Eyed Critical Hit Buff" and the "Precognition Buff," you choose the former.
You turn into a crow and survive by taking turns carrying cards in your beak with Raccoon Shoko, Fox Gon, and White Cat Gojo.
At last, you make it to "Kurta Territory."
You're too busy cheering to notice that fast-forwarding has sent you straight to a death ending.
Your only card that can both attack and heal has been destroyed. Enraged, you set out to get revenge while trying to figure out how to obtain a time-rewind item.
After yet another round of hard work, you make it to the "Dark Continent."
Perhaps the card god takes pity on your abysmal luck at last, because your 80th pull finally gives you a gold card: "Kurapika, Second Form."
You cling to him and cheer, successfully completing the "Time-Rewind Mission."
But one day, a long time later, you receive a story scene. The red-eyed young man smiles faintly, tears or blood streaming down his face as he looks toward you, then falls into an eternal sleep.
You: ...?
You scream, only then realizing that your gold card had left a letter long ago and gone off to fight a duel on his own.
As the game progresses, your map grows larger and you collect more and more characters, until at last you reach the ending.
Someone stands in front of you, looking at you out of habit.
Holding your completion reward, a manga, you compare it with that lock of bangs and suddenly understand.
You're about to enter a new stage, too.
Note: 1. The three original character cards are the protagonists of my previous book. You don't need to have read it; I just want to try telling their story together in a different way.
2. The Jujutsu High group will make guest appearances. The ratio of the player's real life to the game is about 4 to 6.
Theme: On the road of life, you are a player too
