Mo Yan was born in Hanging Domain, a city floating in the sky. But even thousands of feet above the ground, there are still people trampled into the mud below. Neon lights set the eternal day ablaze, while a life of luxury conceals a bottomless abyss.
When every piece of flesh, every muscle and tendon in your body has been replaced with screws and gears, is there still any part of you beneath all that metal that belongs to a human being?
Mo Yan doesn't know, so she's searching.
Searching for the secret buried beneath Hanging Domain centuries ago by marine archaeologists, for proof that she exists as a human being, and for a way to keep herself and the people she wants to protect alive in this world.
Everyone says the surface is covered in poisonous gas, that Earth has suffered an unprecedented mass extinction of prehistoric life, and that Hanging Domain is humanity's only refuge.
Mo Yan doesn't believe it. She wants to go back, return to the ground,
and see a real ocean at least once.
