This is a story about two top students.
Fu Ge has been the perennial runner-up for years. He's aloof and very competitive, but he's also quite adorable. He has an intense admiration for the strong, though not in the usual way. He has his own way of showing it. He can be terrifying when he gets angry, too.
Dong Hubo is, of course, number one. You could practically call him haughty, but he's actually easy to get along with. For instance, if he wants to be friends with someone, he'll boldly reach out. Exams seem to come naturally to him. Wherever he is, nobody else can take first place. (Actually, Dong Hubo is quite optimistic in the novel.)
Later, Dong Hubo develops feelings for Fu Ge and realizes that he's genuinely adorable...
One time, Dong Hubo went to the restroom and discovered Fu Ge's cleanliness obsession. (It's not severe. People misunderstood him. It's the sort of thing some people are simply born with.) Fu Ge hates letting others see him like this. Dong Hubo saw him washing his hands over and over, crying, "I can't get them clean," and, "They're so dirty," as he gripped the sink, on the verge of a breakdown. (He usually holds it in around everyone, then does this in secret somewhere no one knows about. Even Fu Ge's family doesn't know.)
Then the story starts to unfold... They fall for each other.
They get together.
Then, when they go to university, Dong Hubo's parents and some of his other relatives move overseas. He has excellent grades, but ever since childhood, he has never felt free in his family, which is very strict. His parents force him to go abroad for university, so he leaves without saying goodbye. He's gone for four years.
Back in China, Fu Ge develops bipolar disorder because of it. He has a hard time.

"People who love each other will meet again after being separated. As long as the other person still holds the heart that belongs to you, the thread connecting the two of you will grow shorter by fate. What I mean is, perhaps during those four years, we were always by each other's side. I love you. I won't separate from the person fate has bound me to again."
The rest of the story mainly follows Fu Ge's perspective.
