Synopsis
The cool, aloof Sword Saint, whose move "Man and Sword as One" made him famous throughout the world, had countless people climb the mountain to become his disciples. But he devoted himself to sword cultivation and knew nothing of worldly affairs, so he turned them all away.
Then fate struck. A bolt of lightning fell from a clear sky.
Because the Sword Saint stepped into the mountain gate with his right foot, a bolt of lightning split the mountain.
When he woke up, he had transmigrated into the body of the sect's most despised good-for-nothing senior disciple.
He felt his dantian. Apart from his stomach growling with hunger, there really wasn't a single useful thing in it.
True to his title, the Sword Saint kept practicing even when his treatment was so bad he had to toil in the fields. He picked up a wooden sword and pushed aside his blanket to begin training.
In this immortal cultivation world of blades and swords, everyone looked down on the famously useless senior disciple, whose foundation was supposedly terrible. Who could have imagined he had mastered the pinnacle of swordsmanship, winning battle after battle? No one dared order him to clean the latrines or carry shoulder poles anymore. Instead, they offered him precious medicines and elixirs with both hands, hoping he would form a core soon and fulfill his great ambitions.
While others commanded spirit tigers, pythons, and snakes, he commanded a big rooster that went "cock-a-doodle-doo." The fat bird was lazy and greedy, and often refused to move from the road.
With no other choice, he stuffed it in his pocket and carried it around. One moment of carelessness later, the big rooster had gobbled up all the spirit pills and medicines his junior disciple had refined, transforming into a mysterious phoenix.
It turned out the rooster had been born noble, but was cursed and reduced to a chicken anyone could eat. Along the way, it had managed to cultivate into human form by stealing the senior disciple's spirit herbs and medicines. To thank the senior disciple for not stewing it, it asked what reward he wanted. The senior disciple clenched his fist and said solemnly:
"Can you turn back into that egg-laying rooster?"
The senior disciple had gone mad.
That was what the disciples of Jinming Mountain thought.
After waking up, the senior disciple stopped carrying shoulder poles, chopping firewood, and cleaning the latrines. He no longer copied scriptures for others, either. The only chore he was eager to do was go down the mountain to buy eggs from Auntie Li. Otherwise, he refused to work or even leave his courtyard. He spent his days coldly saying nothing and only showed up right on time for meals. According to a junior disciple who passed his courtyard, the senior disciple could often be heard shouting at the sky in the middle of the night: "Sword, come!"
Soon, everyone was uneasy and suspicious of one another.
The only disciple in the entire sect with a useless spiritual root, the first disciple recruited by their once-obscure master after he built his thatched hut, the senior disciple whom even outer disciples could order around, had started practicing swordsmanship!
Somehow, the most respected Second Senior Brother heard about it and began practicing sword techniques with the senior disciple at night. They say the courtyard would echo with cries of "Sword, come!"
The tea-loving, two-faced junior disciple who heard about it naturally didn't forget to bring along the lackeys who had once bullied the senior disciple, ready to mock him.
The conceited junior disciple covered his mouth with a hand and sneered: "A useless spiritual root is like deadwood. No matter how much you burn or roast it, it won't produce the slightest spark. With a body like yours, cultivation must be miserable!"
The senior disciple, who was eating the spirit pills his junior had given him like rice, asked, "Is cultivation that hard?" (Munch, munch.)
The tea-loving junior disciple: "..."
The senior disciple: "?" (Munch, munch.)
Later, the disciples of Jinming Mountain went into a secret realm to seek opportunities and spirit pets, returning with all sorts of fierce beasts that had gained spiritual awareness. The senior disciple came back beaming, hugging a fiery red rooster speckled with colorful feathers. He even happily told their master, "This rooster can lay eggs!"
From then on, whether another sect came to provoke them, they went down the mountain on an errand, or they toured an immortal realm, everyone could see the good-for-nothing senior disciple showing up with his glossy, well-fed rooster in his arms.
The entire team of immortal cultivators instantly lost half their imposing aura.
The tea-loving junior disciple flew into a rage. "I beg you, Senior Brother, can you stop carrying that chicken around?!"
But the Second Senior Brother held back his furious junior and spoke indulgently to the senior disciple, who had just tried to put down his spirit pet:
"Don't be rude to your senior brother. He must have his reasons."
A few days later, he happily carried a newly refined health pill to the senior disciple's courtyard.
There, he found a red-haired, beautiful demon of a man reclining on the bed, his phoenix eyes half-lidded as he savored a grape. He looked just like that fat bird!
The junior disciple raised his sword in anguish. "You wicked demon! How dare you bewitch my senior brother and distract him from cultivation!"
The red-haired man hurriedly stopped him. "You've got it wrong. I didn't distract him!"
Sword-obsessed, guileless foodie senior disciple bottom × deceptively lazy, scheming phoenix (rooster) top
The top serves as a cute pet in this story.
