Patriarch Feng Yulu Du undergoes his tribulation, fakes his death, and runs off down the mountain. His disciple Shan Wuzhou carries his ashes down the mountain, traveling through the mortal world and looking for a place to wait for the patriarch's reincarnation. Instead, he finds the patriarch, who should have been reduced to ashes, selling firewood.
The two are forced to investigate cases and avenge wronged spirits in order to catch resentful demons.
But neither of them has ever learned how to investigate a case.
