The ultimate overachiever, Ji Feng, transmigrates into the body of a scholar who sells tofu.
As an exam fanatic who has never taken the imperial examinations, Ji Feng is very interested in giving them a try.
He originally plans to follow the original owner’s path: take the exams while helping his family sell tofu. But by chance, he saves a handsome, refined ger with a naturally beautiful complexion, and... accidentally ends up in bed with him.
Ji Feng: “I’ll take responsibility. I’ll marry you.”
But the ger calls him a lecher and runs off without looking back!
·
Ji Feng is dumbfounded.
He knows that when a ger loses his virginity, the birthmark on his body turns into a husband’s mark, and there’s no hiding it from his family. He can hardly just leave the matter alone.
He thought it would be difficult to find a ger raised in the seclusion of a sheltered household. Who would have guessed he’d run into one while going to the distillery to buy liquor?
The young ger is ordering his hired hands to bind a middle-aged man hand and foot. He roars, “You’ve got some nerve stirring up trouble with the Yu family! Drag him off to the authorities!”
It turns out the young ger is Yu Luo, the youngest son of the Yu family, who owns the county’s distillery. His two older brothers died in battle, leaving only him and his gravely ill father, so he has no choice but to step up and take charge.
It’s unheard of locally for a ger to run a business, and ever since Yu Luo became the distillery’s manager, he has been plagued by gossip and rumors.
Yu Luo has grown increasingly wary of men and has even declared that he will never marry.
Ji Feng racks his brain. Winning the hand of a ger like this really is going to be an uphill battle.
But how could an overachiever allow himself to fail?
When he hears the Yu family distillery is hiring a new bookkeeper to audit its accounts, Ji Feng applies, relying on the arithmetic skills he developed through modern education to clean up its fraudulent and disorganized books.
At the same time, he expands his family’s tofu business into the distillery, making fried beans, dried tofu, spicy tofu skin, hangover-curing tofu soup... The savory, spicy snacks come in all kinds of varieties, and before he knows it, he has become the county’s biggest tofu supplier.
Ji Feng isn’t content to stop there.
He keeps up with his studies, while helping the man he has already decided is his future husband fight local bullies and develop new brewing recipes. He comes up with one marketing plan after another, helping Yu family liquor find its way into the homes of county officials and wealthy families, while also bringing it within reach of ordinary folk.
As he keeps pushing himself, he unexpectedly passes the licentiate exam. Ji Feng’s parents start planning to find him a match.
Ji Feng’s eyes dart around. In the pouring rain one night, he hurries to the Yu family’s home.
Seeing the concern Yu Luo can’t hide, Ji Feng pretends to be pitiful and says gloomily, “Young Master, my parents are going to force me to marry. What should I do?”
Yu Luo clenches his sleeves. “You’re... twenty already. You should have married long ago. Your parents aren’t wrong.”
Ji Feng: “Young Master, does my previous proposal still stand?”
Yu Luo: “...”
Ji Feng: “All right, but my parents say that with the exams, the family business, and starting a family, I’ll be even busier from now on. I’ll have to quit my job as bookkeeper here. And not just that. I probably won’t be coming around much anymore. I’m wondering if we should invite everyone from the distillery to a farewell dinner...”
Yu Luo suddenly springs up and kicks him into a puddle.
“You’d better not even think about marrying someone else!”
