Gu He is an honest man.
He became a criminal investigator to fulfill his father's last wish, followed his superior's orders to go undercover, and testified on behalf of innocent victims.
In the end, he was hit by a car on his way to court and left in a vegetative state.
When he opened his eyes again, he had transmigrated into a wuxia political-intrigue novel, becoming Gu Hanjing, the "madman" the male lead mentions throughout the ending: a notorious minor officer in the Embroidered Uniform Guard who likes married women and abuses his older brother.
*
The madman's story appears at the very end.
In the original, the male lead says at the emperor's sickbed, "...Chang's promise's scarlet mandarin-duck apron is still hanging from that madman's belt."
System: Complete the plot, and you can wake up from your vegetative state.
Gu He: If it's to testify in court, all I have to do is wear a green hat. I'm in!
System: This is the original story. I'm logging off.
Gu He: What? Wait, don't go! What about the original body's memories?
Gu He after transmigrating into a book: How am I already a scumbag before I even become a madman?
The original owner had just died. The moment Gu He transmigrated into his body and opened his eyes, a butcher and his men were beating him up.
Gu He: What kind of person gets beaten to death for harassing a married woman?
The original owner had an older brother. The moment Gu He walked in, he saw Gu Chao coughing up blood as he wove cloth with a spindle.
Gu He: What kind of person takes his brother's money for medicine to visit a brothel?
The original owner was an Embroidered Uniform Guard. On Gu He's second day after transmigrating, he was thrown into the Imperial Prison.
Gu He: It's bad enough that you cuckolded the male lead's father, but why did you spread rumors about the male lead's beloved too?
Because of the original owner's outrageous antics and the System's terrible guidance,
Gu He is forced to wear the mask of a lecherous villain. He has to deal with the messes the original owner created and look after his brother without letting anyone suspect he's been replaced. On top of that, the story hasn't even started, and he's already offended the male lead, who is the crown prince...
The mission is tough, but Gu He is more than just an honest man. He's also an outstanding criminal investigator who spent eight years undercover in a criminal organization.
Playing the villain, doing good deeds, and earning people's trust...
He's very good at all that.

One day, Gu He finally makes it into the imperial harem. He's seriously discussing aprons and belts with Chang's promise when the male lead suddenly appears.
The male lead, eyes red: You became my personal guard, repeatedly risked your life to save me in the martial world, and helped clear my name and restore me to my position. Was it all just for this woman?
Gu He: That's right. I have a green hat I need to give to...
The male lead, shocked: You want to put a green hat on me!
Gu He: No.
The male lead breathes a sigh of relief.
Gu He: ...It's for your father.
The male lead: ?!
Couple: The original male lead, Li Xuanyue
Cold on the outside, unhinged within, universally disliked Embroidered Uniform Guard bottom x Sweet on the outside, scheming within, universally adored crown prince top
