The Regiment Commander's Wife from the Countryside [The 1970s]

Everyone in the family compound knew that Regiment Commander Zhang was engaged to Zhao Ruiyun, the daughter of the cultured Zhao family.

Who could have guessed that the Zhao family would be purged in a turn of bad fortune, making Miss Zhao, a member of the Black Five Categories, someone everyone now avoided?

And at such a time, it turned out that Zhao Ruiyun was a fake. The real heiress had just returned home from the countryside.

Regiment Commander Zhang traveled all the way to Beijing. Everyone assumed he was going to call off the engagement.

Instead, he came back with a dark, sunburnt young woman, who had a younger sister with her.

A closer look revealed that the young woman was the Zhao family's real daughter.

As Regiment Commander Zhang went ahead and married the true heiress, everyone in the family compound gossiped that a beautiful flower had been stuck in a pile of manure.

Zhao Ruiyun was the eldest legitimate daughter of a century-old family in the Great Qing Dynasty.

Her grace and bearing were renowned in the capital. Unfortunately, she lived through troubled times, her country fell and her family was destroyed, and she suffered an accident that left her injured. Now she even had to marry that stiff, cold brute.

On their wedding day, Zhao Ruiyun laid down three conditions for Zhang Shifei.

First, he had to provide money for the household.

Zhang Shifei nodded. That went without saying.

Second, he wasn't allowed to lay a hand on her.

Zhang Shifei: "I never hit women."

Third, she wanted him to buy her books.

Zhang Shifei: "A country girl likes reading?"

Zhang Shifei hadn't expected it, and neither had anyone in the family compound.

Years later, this regimental commander's wife from the countryside would become a nationally renowned calligrapher.

By then, Regiment Commander Zhang had three conditions for his wife: don't talk to other men, don't talk to other men, and don't talk to other men.

Theme: People should put aside their prejudices.
