When Huo Muxi was six, her father brought home a little boy. He was frail, but his eyes were as sharp as an eagle's. Her mother strongly opposed the sudden arrangement to foster the son of an old friend. As Huo Muxi watched the adults argue, she accidentally hit her head. And so, amid all the chaos, Cheng Yifeng stayed.
In high school, Huo Muxi was always watching someone from afar. Her notebook was filled with that person's name. Cheng Yifeng snatched it away and flipped through a couple of pages, saying disdainfully, "So this is your type."
Huo Muxi jumped up and wrestled the notebook back, only to realize that Cheng Yifeng had somehow grown a head taller than her.
"What's it to you?" Huo Muxi snapped.
Cheng Yifeng leaned against the wall and watched Huo Muxi fluster. Then he suddenly asked, "What do you like about him?"
"He's good at school," Huo Muxi said casually, brushing him off.
Later, Cheng Yifeng, who used to be a poor student, won first prize in a physics competition.
In ten years together, Huo Muxi had never imagined that Cheng Yifeng would leave one day. Even less had she imagined that, in her mother's eyes, their innocent feelings were such a painful thorn.
Her father's sudden death shattered the already fragile balance. The family grew increasingly poor, and there was no reason for her mother to keep supporting Cheng Yifeng. Huo Muxi tried every way she could think of to keep him, even applying to repeat a year and pretending to date someone else. But Cheng Yifeng still had to leave.
After the college entrance exams, they went their separate ways.
In the pouring rain, watching Cheng Yifeng walk away, Huo Muxi cried out, "Cheng Yifeng, I hate you!"
But Cheng Yifeng only said, "Good."
Years later, when they met again, Cheng Yifeng asked, "Who was it you liked that summer?"
Huo Muxi stubbornly replied, "I like everyone in the world except you."
But Cheng Yifeng brought out Huo Muxi's sketchbook. On the page were mountains and water: Cheng Yifeng was the mountain, and Huo Muxi was the water. Beneath the drawing, eighteen-year-old Huo Muxi had written: Mountains and rivers will meet again.
Cheng Yifeng took a sip from Huo Muxi's cup. "I'm your whole world."
