They first met in a small alley beside the school.
The sounds of fighting and cursing inside the alley made Wu Wanyin's heart tighten, and she quickened her pace.
But she was still too late.
A yellow-haired punk covered in tattoos and wearing a gold chain stood not far from Wu Wanyin, grinning wickedly as he whistled at her. "Hey, little girl, where are you going? Come play with us!"

The punk blocked Wu Wanyin's way, saying all kinds of lewd things.

"Cut the crap, you bastard!"
A blood-covered boy stood where the streetlight's glow ended. He was tall and slender, with pale skin and eyes full of murderous rage.
Holding a bloodstained brick, he sneered. "Picking on a little girl is nothing to brag about. If you've got the guts, come take on me!"
Wu Wanyin's eyes flickered. She hadn't expected a boy who looked so well-behaved to fight so viciously.
She thought, I must never mess with someone this dangerous.
The second time they met was during the long break between classes.
Wu Wanyin was carrying a stack of homework to the teachers' office when she saw Yan Shuyu hiding in the stairwell, smoking. The cigarette's glowing red tip sent up wisps of white smoke.
The boy's eyes were shadowy beneath the shifting light.
He saw that Wu Wanyin had clearly noticed him, yet she pretended not to see anything and walked past as if nothing had happened.
In a low voice, he snickered. "Hey, good student. Don't you recognize me?"
Wu Wanyin paused. She stopped and wrote on a sticky note: "I do." Then, with a flick of her pen, she added:
"Smoking is bad for you. You're still growing."
The boy laughed softly, a glimmer in his eyes. "Who are you to me? What business is it of yours?"
