Some enterprises that did not adapt to the transformation of the economic system faced difficulties and stopped production and closed down one after another. The state-owned enterprise where the novel's protagonist Fang Wuhe works enters the countdown to bankruptcy. Like many employees in the factory, he begins to go out to work to save himself and improve his family's plight. The novel describes Fang Wuhe's difficult and happy experience of working outside, and expresses his positive outlook on life in facing difficulties bravely and optimistically.
