As history unfolded, a man named Luo Yi founded a sect. Among all the sects he established, the Jinran Sect took in a "good-for-nothing" named Ling Zhi. Then someone appeared in his life: Shi Qinyuan.
"May I ask your name?"
"Shi Qinyuan. And yours?"
"Ling Zhi..."
During a strange theft, an unsuspecting youth met a sly fox.
"What are you doing here?"
"I can't get out."
"Come on. I'll take you home."
When they encountered a ghost wall, Ling Zhi was helpless and afraid. Shi Qinyuan rescued him, and the two quietly committed each other to memory.
Later, Ling Zhi joined the Jinran Sect. Because he had dual spirit roots, he became Zhao Mu's personal disciple and a fellow sect member of Shi Qinyuan.
Later still, his junior sister Shen Wan discovered that Shi Qinyuan was a fox demon. Wanting to refine him into an elixir to improve her cultivation, she used a forbidden technique that left him unable to fight back. When the Qilin Sect learned of this, they came to capture him. Outnumbered, Ling Zhi was wounded and had no choice but to flee with Shi Qinyuan back to Mount Jiu'an.
After they returned to Mount Jiu'an, Shi Qinyuan's spirit roots were damaged, and he took the form of a beast, lying in Ling Zhi's arms. His tiny body was covered in blood. Ling Zhi didn't know what to do. He held the little body and wept bitterly, watching helplessly as Shi Qinyuan slowly faded away...
