Just after Jiang Yuan is publicly acknowledged by her family, she enters the palace with the three members of the Su family. Along the way, the three excitedly discuss whether the emperor will arrange a marriage for her, to General Xie Wu'an, who recently returned victorious.
Of course, they want to show the royal family how much they care for the daughter who was lost for so many years. They also want Jiang Yuan to see how much the royal family dotes on Su Wan'er, so she'll understand the vast gulf between them.
In the end...
Su Wan'er receives a marriage arrangement that feels like a hot potato, and cries all the way home in the carriage. Her future husband is the famous Marquis of Lin'an.
Everyone in Shengjing knows that the Marquis of Lin'an lives in Jiangnan. He's a ruthless, bloodthirsty fiend, and three of his wives are already dead.
The wedding takes place as scheduled. The prime minister's residence is decked out with lanterns and decorations, everywhere awash in bright red. But the person in the wedding clothes, climbing into the bridal sedan, is Jiang Yuan.

Wu Heng lost both his parents when he was born. For years, he has burned incense for them only on his birthday. After years of careful planning, he finally returns to Shengjing, intent on killing his enemy with his own hands.
Unfortunately, the emperor arranges a marriage for him.
He thinks, "We'll treat each other with respect, then divorce once I've avenged my parents."
But...
His new wife is so frightened by his bad reputation that she seizes every chance to escape, even falling into the trap of someone with ulterior motives. After repeatedly trying to persuade her to no avail, he lets her go. He spends half the night on tenterhooks before finally going against his own instincts to save her.
When his new wife hears that he took a sword wound, she feels deeply guilty. Her own injuries have only just healed, yet she makes three trips a day to his courtyard and won't let him sit at his desk to handle affairs.
Wu Heng feels an unfamiliar emotion stirring inside him. He leaves the marquis's residence overnight with his trusted bodyguard. Just as he is keeping himself numb by throwing himself into his revenge plans, he receives a letter from his new wife and learns that the Su family has harmed her.
He drops everything and races back to Shengjing, but still arrives too late. Seeing how badly injured she is, Wu Heng is filled with regret.
He waits anxiously outside the carriage, but blushes when he hears her sigh to the doctor:
"Wouldn't that make Wu Heng the only person in the world to have seen my perfect back?"
-
When Jiang Yuan learns that she was the last person to know Wu Heng was going to war, she angrily shuts herself away and refuses all contact with him.
In the end, a friend drags her up and hurries her to the city gate tower to see him one last time. She even accidentally wears white. She wishes on every star and waits for the moon, hoping the first snow will fall soon and Wu Heng will return soon.
But before the first snow comes news of the Marquis of Lin'an.
"The Marquis of Lin'an is missing, presumed dead. He's being brought back to Shengjing in a coffin."
All she wants is for Wu Heng to return safely. Nobody in Shengjing cares whether the Marquis of Lin'an lives or dies.
She even puts on a dazzling red dress, bright as a blazing fire, to welcome Wu Heng home.
