For the first half of her life, Yuan Yuncheng prided herself on being more noble than a princess.
Born into the prime minister's household, given a name by the emperor, and raised in the palace from childhood by her aunt, the imperial consort, she was exceptionally granted the title of County Lady. Cherished by all, she enjoyed every luxury and honor.
But in the second half of her life, her family was destroyed, and she was left to wander in hardship.
It all began when the emperor arranged her marriage to Chu Hexuan.
At the Spring Outing Banquet, she deliberately teased the princess and Chu Hexuan, drawing everyone's attention. The emperor even laughed and said he would arrange a marriage between her and Chu Hexuan.
Everyone thought nothing of it and laughed it off, never expecting the emperor to issue an edict the very next day, arranging their marriage.
The Yuan and Chu families had always been at odds, political enemies who fought at every turn, locked in a struggle to the death.
Yet when it came to this marriage, no one from either family objected, from beginning to end.
And so the marriage went ahead.
After they married, the two got along well enough.
On the fourth day of their marriage, Chu Hexuan's father argued with Yuan Yuncheng's father over the withdrawal of troops from the border defenses, then died vomiting blood in court.
Six months later, the Rongdi invaded Chang'an. The emperor and a group of his ministers fled east in a panic.
Chu Hexuan abandoned Yuan Yuncheng, leaving her to flee alone.
Five years later, Chang'an was reclaimed.
When she limped back to the capital, she heard that Chu Hexuan was about to marry the princess.
