Ghosts are haunting the Great Liang palace, and the emperor urgently summons a Celestial Master from the Jade Purity Temple to exorcise them.
Perfected Xuan Yuan packs a large bundle of magical artifacts and marches into the palace, bringing along his exceptionally gifted young disciple Ji Linzhou, who has opened his spiritual eye.
There really are ghosts in the palace.
With cinnabar on his brow and the Soul Ferrying Sword in hand, which stirs at the slightest ghostly wind, Ji Linzhou stares blankly at the dripping wet female ghost before him. A child ghost is standing nearby, too.
The two ghosts squat on the ground, devouring roast chicken as if no one else were there, living or dead.
The female ghost eats and cries at the same time. "I'm starving to death! No one's been burning offerings for me. My life is so miserable."
The child ghost sticks out his long tongue and comforts her in a childish voice. "You've already died. Don't cry. I'll visit my mother in a dream tonight and ask her to burn a few more baskets of crab roe soup dumplings. I'll share some with you."
"Waaah, thank you! They're so delicious!"
Where were the ferocious ghosts with green faces, fangs, and gaping bloody mouths?
After that, Ji Linzhou has a secret: he keeps a clingy, extremely gluttonous female ghost.
When he draws talismans, she sprawls on the table, munching roast chicken and peeking at him. When he eats, she stares longingly at the braised pork in his bowl until he reluctantly burns a portion for her. When he goes out to catch ghosts, she tags along, throwing her weight around and advising the evil spirits to reincarnate and mend their ways.
When he sleeps... Ahem, his chest feels so heavy. He's being pinned down by a ghost again...
He opens his eyes helplessly, and sees a tiny, deathly pale face crouching on his chest, drawing circles.
"Little Daoist, I'm hungry~"
"...Didn't you just eat?"
"That was the last meal, hehe. Where are my offerings?"
Many, many years later, the emperor himself comes to the magic circle and asks Ji Linzhou if he has any wish left to make.
He looks beyond the temple, where a cheerful ghost is playing hide-and-seek through the walls with mountain spirits.
Ji Linzhou lowers his eyes, hiding the tenderness in them.
"I want for nothing else. I only ask, Your Majesty... please grant me a good cook."
