[Revising the complete manuscript]
The clouds hung motionless in the July sky, and the hot air came rushing in. Dogs and people alike lay sluggishly on the ground, as if rusted in place.
A red balloon, lost by someone, drifted along the street, jostled back and forth beneath people's feet.
Waiting for the traffic light at the intersection to turn green, I held Shen Luo's hand and ran quickly down the street with my schoolbag on my back.
Her palm was hot, her steps heavy. I didn't need to look back to know she was keeping up just fine. I knew everything about Shen Luo.
At least, that's what I thought.
It had rained just a few days ago, but the weather had heated up again without warning, competing with the cool air for people's patience.
This was the most important day for Shen Luo and me. I would remember it for many years to come.
