The year Jiang Yiya graduated from university, she did two things that stunned everyone in her social circle: she joined a top company in her industry, and she got married in a flash.
Pei Mochen came from a family of doctors. He had been serious and aloof since childhood, and skipping grades meant he had nothing in common with people his own age.
When the elders in his family brought up the marriage, he briefly looked away from the research paper he was reading and replied, "I have no objections."
After getting married, they lived in different countries for three years and barely saw each other. Everyone in their circle said their marriage was only in name and was bound to fall apart sooner or later.
Jiang Yiya took it all in stride. After all, she was patient enough to raise both a beagle and a cow cat.
She had assumed Pei Mochen would put up with it for at most another year. She never expected to be the one to ask to end things first.
"Can you come back to China? I want a divorce."
Jiang Yiya sent the message from the mountains. After calming herself down, she forced a smile and faced a difficult client. Just as she slipped her phone into her bag, a reply popped up, almost instantly.
"Okay."

Pei Mochen had always been the kind of child other parents held up as an example. He had calmly accepted the childhood betrothal his grandparents had jokingly arranged, and everyone, including his younger brother, thought it was simply because he didn't want to put his parents in a difficult position.
After all, the two were far from a good match: one was a designer whose looks could rival a celebrity's and whose career was flourishing, while the other was a solemn third-generation doctor from a strict, traditional family.
Everyone's suspicions were confirmed when Pei Mochen hurried back to China.
News that Jiang Yiya was about to become single spread quickly, and her friends came by one after another to comfort her.
The one who opened the door was Pei Mochen, looking disheveled. He was trying to pry open the cow cat's mouth and force in a pill, but had failed.
Once inside, everyone was left dumbfounded. Dr. Pei, the germaphobe, was expertly brushing the cat's fur. A beagle tore past, scattering the cat litter and knocking over a pile of things, but he remained perfectly calm.
A divorce agreement lying on the floor caught everyone's eye. Only Jiang Yiya's signature was on it, and Pei Mochen lost his composure.
He quickly tore up the agreement. A warning came from the bedroom: "Make another sound and you're sleeping on the bay window tonight."
Dr. Pei: "Yes, honey."
Then he drove everyone out of the house.
