Little Bell wasn't originally called Little Bell, but nobody cared what his real name was.
He came from a defeated family in a remote star system. Since he wore a bell earring in his left ear, everyone called him that.
Little Bell was enslaved and sent to a poor planet to mine and farm. When he was unexpectedly discovered to have the abilities of a B-rank Sentinel, he was assigned to the Leslow Sentinel and Guide Management Center and began fighting for Planet E330.
But because he was only a B-rank Sentinel, he would never even get the chance to meet an S-rank Guide, let alone receive guidance from one.
All Sentinels below A-rank could only rely on medication to ease their symptoms in battle. They were recalled for machine-assisted guidance only when they were on the verge of going berserk.
Little Bell always gave everything he had in battle. His blood would spray all over the guidance room, and the medical staff often complained about him.
"Honestly, these B-rank Sentinels are so useless. The medical support they get costs far more than what they contribute, and they make this place filthy..."
Little Bell simply lay on the guidance bed and smiled bitterly at the unrestrained mockery, never once complaining about anyone.
Almost his entire family had been wiped out. Back on that remote, unlivable planet, he had to make a single potato last for days. Here, there was white rice and even hamburgers. He was already very satisfied.
At first, he was that optimistic. He worked diligently and never complained, spending day and night clearing weak monsters in all the many low-level gates.
But at a gathering of Sentinels, all the Sentinels and Guides at Leslow were summoned by the higher-ups. There, he saw the legendary S-rank Guides and Sentinels.
Even from far away, he could see the man at the front of the group. Dressed in a white military uniform, with black hair and red eyes, he stood out brilliantly. A tremor erupted in Little Bell's heart once more.
Anster, captain of Team One at the Leslow Sentinel and Guide Management Center, was one of only two S-rank Guides in the country, and the only person with the dual ability of an S-rank Sentinel.
Admiration, jealousy: every face revealed a complicated mix of emotions.
Little Bell only glanced at him before lowering his head, his heart pounding.
He had once met Anster, a year ago. Carrying guidance medication, he had been sent alone to handle a low-level gate. He had done it several times before. Killing D-rank monsters was as repetitive and exhausting as weeding, and he could handle even a boss on his own.
He expected this mission to be like the others, just a little longer and harder. But this time, something went wrong. The D-rank gate had quietly upgraded to B-rank. He didn't know that hybrid gates existed, and after eliminating the D-rank boss, a large number of B-rank monsters appeared.
Unable to call for help, he fought desperately until he had used up all his guidance medication and was on the verge of going berserk. For the first time, he felt an enormous pain wash over him like a tide. Blood spurted from the blood vessels along the insides of his eyelids.
No wonder so many low-level Sentinels couldn't get relief, went mad, and killed themselves. So this was what it was like: so agonizing, so unbearable, enough to drive anyone mad.
With the last of his strength, he crawled out of the gate. Through his blood-blurred vision, he saw a man floating in midair, looking at him in surprise. The man then glided lightly down and flew toward him.
"Poor thing~ How did you end up in a B-rank gate all by yourself?"
Whether it was charity or something else, a kiss devoid of any affection covered Little Bell's lips.
Little Bell was like a dried-out sponge soaking up water. Overwhelmed with relief, he instinctively stuck out his bloodstained tongue and tangled it with the other's, greedily drawing the moisture from his mouth. He had never dared to hope for guidance through an S-rank Guide's mucous membranes.
So this was what it felt like: utterly intoxicating. The pain faded quickly, and an overwhelming pleasure in his mind made him lose himself...
Reading guide:
Both are each other's first and only partners. A naturally optimistic B-rank Sentinel bottom x a cold-blooded, highly intelligent S-rank Guide top
(The bottom has a real name.)
