The man smiled like a big, sly wolf and answered with certainty, "That's right."

"You."

Later, the little blondie would desperately cling to the school gate every day. "I-I can't go today. I haven't finished correcting my math test yet."

"I'll teach you."

The little blondie tried again. "I have to stay behind and clean today. Go wander around by yourself."

"I'll help you."

The little blondie made one last, futile attempt. Cornered, he had no choice but to pull out his trump card and shout, "I have a girlfriend! I want to go to college with her. I really can't keep wandering around with you all day!"

Mostly, he just couldn't walk any farther!

The little blondie wore a long face, racking his brain for a way to fend off the next round, when

the other guy gave an unreadable little laugh and said, "A girlfriend?"

He spoke each word slowly and softly, as if every one deserved to be savored and pondered over for a long time.
