Zhang Yanxiu was born with an immortal's body, a god from the moment he came into the world. He should have spent a leisurely life in Heaven, enjoying the incense offered to him.
He loved granting people's wishes, but things kept going wrong and people complained. After investigating, Heaven's Oversight Commission decided to send him down to the human world to learn what people really wanted. He could return to his post once he had learned his lesson.
Zhang Yanxiu refused to accept it. He had granted every single wish. How could people still be complaining?
Case one: Two lovers had a rough journey in life and could not stay together. After they died, all they wanted was to be together forever in their next life.
Zhang Yanxiu: All right. In your next life, you'll be twins, together forever and ever.
Case two: I wish for love to come into my life.
Zhang Yanxiu: All right. I'll arrange a super-sweet romance for your best friend, so you'll have something to swoon over every day.
Case three: Please bless my son so he gets into one of China's top universities.
Zhang Yanxiu: A taxi with the license plate 985 is on its way.
Zhang Yanxiu looked at the complaints one by one and saw nothing wrong with what he had done. He'd granted the wishes, hadn't he? What was the problem?
Heaven's Oversight Commission: It's hard to explain. You'll understand once you're down there.
Before Zhang Yanxiu could protest again, he was kicked down to the human world. From the start, he had a dilapidated Taoist temple. Feeling thoroughly aggrieved, he became an apprentice, telling fortunes to earn money while raising funds for a gilded statue of himself. Make a wish, and he'll make it happen!
Little Scene 1
At last, a statue was installed in the temple's main hall. A worshipper came to offer incense, then looked at the statue's face, which was identical to Zhang Yanxiu's, in surprise.
"Daoist priest, why does the God of Wishes look exactly like you?"
Zhang Yanxiu glanced up at the brand-new statue. He thought that no sculpture could capture even a fraction of his own liveliness, but he smiled warmly and answered with a straight face.
"The gods have no fixed appearance. When I was raising funds for the statue, the God of Wishes rejected every likeness I showed him. He finally appeared in my dream and told me that, as his devoted servant, I was his representative in the human world. He said to use my face as his incarnation, so people would find him a little more approachable."
Little Scene 2
Zhu Chu offered three sticks of incense in front of the altar, then turned to Zhang Yanxiu.
"Can every wish in one's heart really come true?"
Zhang Yanxiu gazed at the handsome man before him, his smile growing wider.
"Of course. The God of Wishes has a particular fondness for beautiful people. Your wish is sure to come true."
"Then I want you." Zhu Chu looked at Zhang Yanxiu with firm conviction. Zhang Yanxiu looked troubled, then seemed to make up his mind.
"Go home and wait. Your wish will come true tomorrow."
The next day, a life-size, gold-plated statue of Zhang Yanxiu was delivered to Zhu Chu's house. Back at the temple, Zhang Yanxiu's heart ached at the cost. Beauty really does lead people astray. Why had he agreed to everything? Statues are expensive!
Zhu Chu had worked at the Oversight Commission for three thousand years and was finally due for an honorable retirement. Then complaints started pouring in like snowflakes, threatening his three-thousand-year record of excellence. Zhu Chu frowned as he read through them one by one.
He sent the culprit down to the human world, but worried he would never change, so Zhu Chu transformed into a little bird and followed him to keep an eye on him. He had to make sure Zhang Yanxiu understood what he had done wrong.
But the longer he watched, the more he wondered: How could this kid be so cute?
