[Married Woman & Vengeful Ghost Pretending to Be a God]
In the second month of their marriage, Huaixi's husband suddenly fell into a deep sleep and would not wake. The doctors were useless, witchcraft was useless, and all kinds of folk remedies were useless too.
With nowhere else to turn, Huaixi began worshipping the forsaken god on Yanshan, a deity no one ever visited.
The god promised her that her husband would recover completely.
In return, the god made two demands:
First, she must not tell anyone that the god had answered her prayers.
Second, she must enshrine the god in her home.
The god was gentle and courteous, and made no unreasonable demands, so Huaixi gladly agreed.
After she began worshipping the god, her life kept getting better.
The god improved her luck with money, and often cooked for her while she was out gathering herbs, waiting for her to come home.
The only problem was that her husband slept for longer and longer stretches. On the rare occasions he woke, he only said strange things.
When she asked about the god, her husband only smiled and said it was normal, so Huaixi didn't think much more of it.
Then one day, while Huaixi was out gathering herbs, she ran into a shaman. He insisted she was being haunted by a vengeful ghost and hurried to draw a talisman to drive it away, warning that her life was in danger otherwise.
She refused again and again, saying she worshipped a god every day, so there was no way a vengeful ghost could be haunting her.
But the shaman wouldn't listen. The sun had set by the time she finally managed to get away.
When she got home, the room was lifeless: no warm lamplight, no delicious food cooking, and no sign of the god.
She carefully pushed the door open, wanting to check on her husband, only to suddenly notice the corpse spots on his face: pale purple patterns covered it.
He looked as if he had been dead for a long time.
A chill suddenly swept across her waist. A moment later, Huaixi heard that familiar, gentle voice beside her ear.
"You're home late."
Her mind exploded.
At that moment, she realized:
--The shaman had been right.
What she had been worshipping wasn't a god, but a ghost.
