"You're making a fuss over nothing." Lu Yanting caressed her cheek, casually glancing at the man behind the curtain. "Yu Niang and I have always been this close."

Lu Yanting was gentle as jade and elegant in manner, a bright moon in the clouds, out of reach for every young lady in the capital.

But in his heart and eyes, there was only his younger sister, Lu Zhaoning.

He thought that if he passed the imperial examinations and gained enough power, he could protect his sister, who had a disability, and watch her find a suitable husband and live a happy, peaceful life.

Until one day, Lu Zhaoning really did bring a man around in front of him.

His talent... average, nowhere near as good as his own.

His family... unimpressive, nothing compared to his.

His looks... passable, about average for the capital.

At first, he only criticized the man in secret. Then one day, Lu Zhaoning gave him a good-luck charm.

She had picked it up while praying for that man.

"Lu Zhaoning," he said, gripping the charm so tightly he nearly ground his teeth to dust. "Was your older brother just an afterthought?"

1. The female lead has a glass eye in her left socket.

2. The female lead grows over the course of the story. Part of the reason she is called a "villainess" is a misunderstanding; she isn't simply evil without regard for right and wrong.

3. By the time they confirm their relationship, both know they are not related by blood.
