When Pei Zhixian was six, he found a little boy with blond hair and blue eyes, his hair all curly, in the backyard. The boy babbled in a language Pei Zhixian couldn't understand, so he secretly brought him home and played with him in his room all afternoon.
When his family finally found them, Pei Zhixian hurried to shield the boy and snapped, "I found him! You can't take him away!"
Only then did he learn that the little curly-haired boy was Ning Qingwei, the child of the family that had just moved in next door. Ning Qingwei was mixed Chinese and British, and his health was poor, so he always had to take lots of medicine.
