At seventeen, Yu Qier was dumped in a remote, impoverished place.
Hoping to earn her father's approval and get him to come take her home sooner, she moved into Bian Lin's shabby little house.
She was sick to death of it all, ordering the boy to carry the old fan for her. "Bian Lin, if I still can't sleep comfortably during my nap, you're done for!"
The gauzy curtain swayed in the breeze, doing nothing to relieve the damp, stifling heat.
Bian Lin leaned outside, the vocabulary book in his hands beginning to fade. He lowered his eyes and silently held up the fan.
Until a scorching drop of sweat fell onto her pale ankle.
To drive her away, Bian Lin swallowed his anger and endured.
At twenty-seven, Yu Qier moved into Bian Lin's villa to spite her father.
Wearing Bian Lin's shirt, she drove away the curly-haired woman at his side. After throwing a tantrum, she told him to replace the bed. "I won't sleep in a bed another woman has touched!"
The man stood before the floor-to-ceiling window. "Yu Qier, we're married."
"So what?"
Bian Lin walked over and gripped her pointed chin. "So you can rest assured. I won't betray our marriage like you did."
To keep her, Bian Lin endured, again and again.
At a later banquet, she wore a designer gown, every strand of her hair styled to perfection. Her feet had been rubbed raw, and everyone rushed around to help her.
Yu Qier was famous for being picky.
Someone asked, "Isn't it exhausting living with her?"
Bian Lin held her flats in his hand and glanced toward the woman in the distance.
He had once held up a fan for her all summer long. Now, having fulfilled the wish he'd made at seventeen, he smiled.
"I couldn't be happier."
"Through the raging storm, I run, begging for a film that will never wrap."
