Yang Sui, who had been missing for ten years, returned to Yuling Village. That very night, her grandmother Wang Qinglian died.
Everyone said a soul reaper had come for her, but Yang Sui shook her head.
Wang Qinglian had already died before she saw her. Yang Sui had merely exposed the truth in passing, watched a good show, and reclaimed what belonged to her.
Newly rich, Yang Sui quickly bought a house and property. She deliberately chose a haunted house, planning to collect the ghost inside and make the place her own little sanctuary.
She was a soul reaper now. Why should she be afraid of ghosts?
Who could have guessed it was a fierce ghost, and that while trying to collect it, Yang Sui would accidentally drag her colleague Zheng Yizi into the mess?
Only afterward did she learn that a shocking case had taken place in her district that night, one that had stunned both the living and the dead. Several fellow soul reapers had met violent deaths, and their bodies had been left in a horrific state.
Zheng Yizi, whom she had accidentally dragged into it, had actually survived thanks to her.
But there was no time to lose.
Soul reapers had a fixed lifespan. Those who died violently were liable to become fierce ghosts and wreak havoc among the living. The Underworld immediately dispatched an investigation team to Hongkou Subdistrict Office to investigate the soul reapers' deaths and collect their ghosts.
Yang Sui's new partner was Qi Yu, the head of the investigation team.
The moment Yang Sui recognized Qi Yu, she was mortified.
Because the night before, she had accidentally opened a ghost gate in his bathroom and gotten a full view of her new boss's assets.
Before joining the investigation team, Qi Yu had carefully reviewed the files of the Hongkou Subdistrict Office employees. One soul reaper named Yang Sui caught his attention.
She was aloof and disdained currying favor, yet after five years on the job, she was still a low-level employee and perpetually broke.
She had inexplicably terrible luck, yet always managed to escape danger. Qi Yu opened his Heavenly Eye, but still couldn't see through her fate.
Curious, he moved in next door to her. Who knew the woman would behave like a pervert and ambush him while he was showering!
Furious after she saw him naked, Qi Yu insisted on punishing her properly. But the woman was stubborn, and refused to beg for mercy no matter what!
No rush. He had plenty of time to deal with her, until she admitted she was wrong.
One day, the Judge returned to the human world with enormous dark circles under his eyes to see his boss, only to stumble across Qi Yu holding a beautiful woman and kissing her passionately. The thousand-year-old iron tree had finally blossomed, and the Judge was so shocked his soul flew back to the Underworld.
Wait, you've started dating, but are you still going to be an official?
Please add my next novel, The First Thing After Passing the Exam, to your reading list.
The first thing after passing the exam is to dump your sweetheart.
Although this saying comes from a later internet meme, Tu Jiaojiao thinks it perfectly describes her and her husband, Yan Shu.
Yan Shu was an educated youth sent down to her village in 1972. A famine was raging in the countryside then, and many villagers starved to death. She saved Yan Shu without telling her family, using the emergency rations she had secretly stashed away.
As for why she saved him, Tu Jiaojiao leaps up and declares that of course it's because she's public-spirited, brave, and righteous... Actually, none of those are true.
She simply couldn't take her eyes off Yan Shu. That tall, straight nose, those deep-set eyes, legs longer than her life, and that stubborn little look paired with his melancholy air had her completely smitten. All she wanted was to make him hers as soon as possible...
She didn't even mind that the only place he could live was a cowshed on the verge of collapse, all because she wanted to marry him.
So when Yan Shu asked how he could repay her for saving his life, Tu Jiaojiao answered without hesitation: “Marry me. When you get the chance to return to the city, remember to take me with you.”
Yan Shu's brow twitched, but the food was in her hands, so he had no choice but to give in.
They married in a hurry. Their wedding home was the cowshed the production team had assigned Yan Shu, and Tu Jiaojiao didn't mind in the least.
After five years of marriage, Tu Jiaojiao still hadn't had a child, and she was growing anxious. But then Yan Shu's life took a turn: the college entrance exams were reinstated.
Yan Shu devoted himself to studying and had to leave all the housework to Tu Jiaojiao. He solemnly promised that if he got into college, he would take her to the city.
He succeeded, becoming the first person from their remote village to pass the exams and return to the city. True to his word, he took Tu Jiaojiao with him.
But the day after they returned, Yan Shu formally asked her for a divorce.
Tu Jiaojiao had a dream. She dreamed that a famine suddenly struck the countryside, that she saved an educated youth named Yan Shu and married him, and that although he ate her food and drank her water and took her to the city, he suddenly wanted to divorce her.
Tu Jiaojiao: You ungrateful bastard! You think you're the only one who can study?
And then, in 1977, two golden phoenixes rose from Wuli Township.
