Yuan Yuan's father was a teacher who loved to watch his child study every day.
Yuan Yuan had the hardest time sitting still. Whenever it was time to study, she'd find an excuse to sneak out.
But there was a diligent, studious boy named Lu Rang in the neighboring courtyard. Since they were neighbors, Teacher Yuan specifically invited him to attend lessons too.
Whenever Yuan Yuan managed to skip class and sneak back, her father would point at her and scold her, adding, "Look how much Lu Rang loves studying. Now look at you!"
"Are you trying to drive your father to an early grave?"
Yuan Yuan glared viciously at the cool, aloof Lu Rang beside her, then burst into tears. "If you like Lu Rang so much, why don't you make him your child instead?"
"I'm telling Mother on you! ... Sob..."
The boy beside her looked at the little girl, her face red from crying, with a complicated look in his eyes.
Never mind. She already hates me. I shouldn't do anything to make her dislike me even more.
From then on, Yuan Yuan would find ways to cause Lu Rang trouble whenever she could.
But the little girl meant no real harm. The worst she could think of was swapping Lu Rang's finished homework with her own unfinished work.
Unfortunately, her father caught her and made her copy a book three times as punishment.
Yuan Yuan copied it while crying. When she saw Lu Rang beside her, she broke down even harder and shoved him away. "Get lost! I hate you!"
Lu Rang gripped the book he'd already finished copying. After hesitating for a long time, he lowered his head and said, "I'm sorry." Then he turned and left.
Yuan Yuan was left behind, sobbing in hiccups. "Saying you're sorry won't help. I still hate you..."
Yuan Yuan and Lu Rang grew increasingly distant, at least in her eyes, because she was always finding ways to bother him and embarrass him.
Sometimes, she'd even whisper bad things about him to her younger brother. Though he always looked at her disapprovingly, she was the older sister, after all. What she said had to be right!
And then, at last, all three children grew up.
Yuan Yuan was nearing the age to marry.
She'd never imagined that Lu Rang would place third in the palace examination, much less that the first thing he'd do upon returning would be to ask for her hand in marriage!
Yuan Yuan remembered the foolish things she'd done as a child and felt a surge of dread.
If she married Lu Rang, would he torment her to get revenge?
Sob... Her life was in danger!
On their wedding night, Yuan Yuan lowered her round fan and begged for mercy. She confessed to every "bad deed" she'd committed as a child, then pleaded pitifully, "Lord Lu, please be kind and spare my life."
Lu Rang lifted her chin and smiled playfully. "That depends on how you behave."
