[A truly twisted assassin gets remade into a loyal dog * A weak, kind heroine is forced to hold his leash]
Cui Baiwei, the daughter of a disgraced minister whose father defected to the enemy, is caught up in an undeserved calamity. With her uncle's help, she flees the capital in a panic.
She never expects assassins to come one after another along the way, all out to take the life of a mere woman.
Who would have thought that three of the four groups of assassins are there to kill her, while the remaining one not only spares her but saves her again and again?
Baiwei is deeply grateful and thanks him profusely. The cold, impassive assassin finally smiles when he sees her trembling.
"You're thanking me too soon. I'm here to kill you too."
It turns out he thinks highly of himself and considers himself one of the best assassins around. He refuses to let anyone else take the life of his assigned target.
Baiwei cries that heaven is determined to destroy her.
But then fortune takes a turn. The two of them are trapped and fall off a cliff, only to be rescued by an old man. Baiwei stares at the wounded, unconscious assassin, wondering how she can make sure he never wakes up.
But her plan falls through. Not only does he wake up, he takes her hostage and demands to know who he is.
The assassin who came to kill her has lost his memory.
In her panic, Baiwei blurts out, "I'm your wife. You can't kill me!"
He sneers, his hand never stopping.
Baiwei has no choice but to raise the stakes. "I'm carrying your child. You can't kill me!"
He freezes, hesitating for a moment.
Baiwei continues to lie. "You have moles behind your ear, on your forearm, three inches below your navel, and on the right side of your left leg. If you don't believe me, there's another on your butt..."
The assassin flies into a rage. "Shut up!"
Thanks to all that, Baiwei manages to keep her life. But being married to an assassin who could regain his memories at any moment seems a hundred times harder than escaping death by the blade.
As time goes by, though, Baiwei realizes that if this man weren't an assassin, he'd make a pretty good farmer with a quiet life.
He may be cold, but he's thoughtful and gentle. He stands up for her when she's humiliated and straightens her back when she loses her nerve. His hands no longer hold a sword. Now he tends the flowers, raises chickens and ducks, and keeps their little courtyard neat and tidy. For the first time in a long while, Baiwei knows what it feels like to have a home.
If only she hadn't lied to him...
When she can't give birth to a child after ten months, how will she explain it to him?
With no other choice, Baiwei makes an excuse and leaves him with nothing but a coldly worded letter. She figures that no matter how extraordinary he is, he'll never find a woman from a different family name who lives far away.
But...he comes for her.
With a knife in hand and no smile on his face.
"Wife, where is our child?"
