"Shui called me last night to go see the horse."
Yang Heyi is haunted by a strange nightmare from her university days. A woman named Shui keeps appearing beside her like a ghost, then silently walking away and vanishing.
The young architect never entered her own golden age. As she faces the choice of what to do during a deep industry downturn, her inner demons return in the dead of night, striking the great bell again and again as they demand to know who lives and who dies. In a montage, Yang Heyi lays out the stories of her life before her, playing them one after another: a sick female student in agony who longs for death; her trans childhood friend Piaopiao; Shui, the silent woman who paints meticulous, detailed scenes; and Zhang Di, a long-haired man shrouded in mist.
A white horse is not a horse. Piaopiao is gone. As her memories gradually come together into a complete picture, she finds the courage of an Odyssey, gathers up the fragments of her past, and sets out again.
