(Hermes' Trap, my other novel, is now available. The high-level villainess has plenty of strength and tricks. Synopsis at the end.)
A high self-worth, universally adored woman × an insecure, gloomy man
Their one-year marriage came to an end, and Wei Tinglan happily divorced Lu Shenzhi.
The day after moving back into her family home, she found a diary in her luggage.
The writing on the yellowed pages was familiar. It was her ex-husband's:
[Your time with him stood still, while I spent my entire life making up for the time you two had once spent together.]
[I traveled with you and your friends. You're good at surfing, and you kept clamoring to try skydiving. There's nothing in this world you're not good at. Above all, you have a natural talent for being loved. But this is the one thing I selfishly hope you're not so good at.]
Wei Tinglan was stunned.
Her ex-husband, who always acted so aloof and arrogant around others, had secretly loved someone else all these years.
A coward, a scumbag, and a man with no taste.
That was Wei Tinglan's verdict.
Anyone who didn't like her had no taste.
*
One night after the divorce, Wei Tinglan came home with the younger boyfriend she'd just started dating.
Her young boyfriend called her "Sis" over and over until she was dizzy with delight. Before she could enjoy the pleasures of a young body, she ran into her long-waiting ex-husband at her front door.
The man's eyes flickered, his gaze so gloomy it looked ready to bleed.
The young boyfriend felt his scalp tingle under that stare.
"Sis, who's this...?"
"My ex-husband."
Wei Tinglan couldn't even be bothered to look at him. She simply opened the door.
The next second, Lu Shenzhi squeezed in behind her and slammed the door shut.
Darkness concealed the red at the corners of his eyes, but his slightly hoarse voice still gave away his feelings:
"Stop looking for other men. Can't I do?"
Wei Tinglan pushed him away.
"Does the person you call your one true love in that diary know you're here looking for me?"
*
After divorcing Wei Tinglan, the usually calm and composed Lu Shenzhi spent a long stretch in a daze.
Night and day, he rummaged through the things in his drawers:
From her name tag when she was sixteen, to the dried flowers she'd casually thrown away at eighteen, to the pajamas she often wore after they got married.
In corners she'd never noticed, Lu Shenzhi had collected everything of hers, recording the years she'd been part of his life in page after page of writing.
He'd always known Wei Tinglan wouldn't stay for anyone. Not even marriage could become a shackle holding her back.
But that was all right. If she wouldn't stay, he would go wherever she went.
He could be her name tag, her dried flowers, her clothes.
Or the dog she could call over and send away whenever she pleased.

"You are a prolonged spell of extreme weather in my life."
[Reading Guide]
1. The male lead is devoted and faithful in body and heart. He will never love anyone of the opposite sex other than the heroine. He divorced her because he respected her decision.
2. The heroine is universally adored and dates someone after her divorce.
3. Young Wei's character card is from @Hey_Kiraaa. Thanks, dear!
"Hermes' Trap"
The god who symbolizes lies and trickery sets a trap.
The prey willingly leaps into the game.
-
In her third year studying abroad, Zhou Feiqian's family went bankrupt and stopped supporting her.
To cover the steep costs, she tried almost every legal way to make money.
When Cheng Junyan found her, she was working as a server in a cafe.
The streets at dusk were noisy and crowded, and Cheng Junyan's smile was brighter than the setting sun.
"Let's make a deal." He handed her a black card. "Help me deal with your old rival."
A numb nerve stirred. Tentatively, she said the familiar name:
"Fu Jiaheng?"
"That's right. Fu Jiaheng."
-
Fu Jiaheng and Zhou Feiqian reunited in the second year after graduation.
Just as he remembered, she was still forceful, dazzling, and used to getting her way.
The only difference was that they had gone from rivals to allies.
Zhou Feiqian had both ambition and the means to achieve it. In just a year, she helped him establish himself in his family's faction-ridden business empire.
While he gained money and power, Fu Jiaheng gave himself to her.
He depended on her and never tried to hide it.
Even when she was cold and distant, always distracted when they were together, he remained intoxicated by the illusion she had woven.
Fu Jiaheng thought that was simply who she was.
Until one day, he saw her walking with Cheng Junyan.
She held Cheng Junyan's arm affectionately, smiling and speaking to him with gentle warmth, like a soft breeze.
-
Zhou Feiqian said they were just friends.
Fu Jiaheng believed her. He couldn't bear the cost of not believing.
But when he rang her doorbell and saw Cheng Junyan open the door, the usually composed man still couldn't stop himself from throwing a punch.
"Stay away from Feiqian," he snarled.
Cheng Junyan casually wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth, then looked back at the half-closed door behind him.
Zhou Feiqian fastened the last button on her clothes. Her voice was softer than Fu Jiaheng had ever heard it:
"Jiaheng, you don't mind, do you?"
-
They were both wrong.
Zhou Feiqian was neither a blade nor a gentle breeze.
She was Hermes, laying a trap.
She kissed their wounds and devoured everything they had.
Standing on their bleeding wounds, she wished them many more years just like this in the gentlest voice.
[Reading Guide]
1. The heroine is not a virgin, while the male leads are. The heroine is a hunter and will do whatever it takes to get what she wants.
2. No real-life inspirations. Don't read anything into it, don't feel sorry for the male lead, and don't judge the heroine.
3. Written during a manic episode. Turn off your brain while reading.
Theme: You deserve to have it all
I want to see the heroine reborn, pretending not to know what the hero is doing, secretly observing him for a while and then catching him.
I want to see the solo perspective of the male protagonist who had a crush on the female protagonist during those years before he married the female protagonist.
Every time I see what the author has to say (and the writing style), I feel that the author should be a highly educated and normal person (I don't know what other words to use instead). But I didn't expect to see you often saying that you need to take medicine and be hospitalized to stabilize your life. I am also suffering from similar psychological distress, but it is not as serious as yours. I am very envious of your ability to express my pain and observations in the form of a book (I do not say that you are spreading pain). The same goes for the male protagonist of this book. He fell in love with the female protagonist because he was seen. This is also a word that touches me very much. The male protagonist always feels that he is not good enough and works hard to prove that he is worthy of being loved. But in fact, in the eyes of others, he is already excellent and perfect, but he can never see his own goodness. Maybe what we need is not for others to see ourselves, but for ourselves to see ourselves. Maybe the protagonist of this book has your own shadow. I hope we can all truly love ourselves a little more. I wish you good health and continue to write what you want to write.
Woo woo woo woo, I couldn't help but my eyes rolled up after reading the composition. Thank you for your hard work, baby, please take a nap.
