A calm, thoughtful sci-fi novelist x a steady, mature cardiac surgeon
When Jiang Nian broke up with Guan Yuesheng, it was during a typhoon the likes of which came only once in more than a decade.
She sent him a message. Dr. Guan must have been in surgery, because he didn't reply until nearly midnight.
His text contained just one word: Okay.
Later, the zombie outbreak began. During the two years she spent struggling to survive on her own, she never managed to get in touch with Guan Yuesheng.
She died in the winter of the second year.
Then she was reborn one month before the city fell.
-
On the third day after her rebirth, she came down with a high fever and pain all over her body.
After the fever broke, Jiang Nian felt that something was wrong with her.
Her limbs felt heavy and hot. The wheels of the cart rolling outside her hospital room sounded like they were grinding through her skull, and she could read the tiny writing on the duty roster on the wall.
Through the crowd, she suddenly caught a familiar yet strange scent.
It was familiar because it was Guan Yuesheng's scent.
It was strange because of the way her body reacted.
Her throat went dry, her heart raced, and her gums began to itch.
She turned her face on the hospital bed. Nearby, Guan Yuesheng was leaning over to speak with a patient.
His jaw and neck disappeared beneath his white collar, making her head spin.
-
The city fell as expected.
To be fair, Guan Yuesheng was a good person to have as a partner.
He was calm and composed, good at planning, a great cook, and could handle injuries or illness all on his own.
Having someone like him by her side made her feel much more at ease.
...Sometimes, not so much.
One night, Guan Yuesheng winced in pain and gripped her burning nape. "Biting people?"
Jiang Nian came to her senses and released his neck from her teeth. She licked her lips. "Sorry."
