Princess Fu Ciying of Jianing was gentle and elegant, delicate and lovely, with a beauty as captivating as a blooming lotus.
An orphan from a family of generals, she was still young when the emperor and empress took pity on her, bestowed the title of princess upon her, and raised her in the palace.
In that strange imperial palace, her elder brother, two years her senior, became the person she relied on most.
They said the Crown Prince was as aloof as the moon in the sky, distant and hard to approach. But to Fu Ciying, her elder brother was always gentle and indulgent toward her.
So he was always the first person she confided in.
For instance, she told him she hoped to find a suitable future husband for herself at the flower-viewing banquet.
After hearing her out, the Crown Prince smiled faintly and promised, "Don't worry. Your brother will find you the finest gentleman in all the land."

Crown Prince Pei Yao was disciplined and proper, as bright and clear as the wind after rain. He looked after his adopted younger sister in every way and always indulged her.
Knowing that his sister was old enough to choose a husband, he followed the emperor and empress's instructions and arranged a flawless candidate for her to meet.
But when Pei Yao saw Fu Ciying chatting happily with the young gentleman, her eyes and brows brimming with the shy smiles of a girl falling in love, an unbounded jealousy suddenly flared in his heart.
Why should the younger sister he had raised marry someone else?
What gentleman in all the world could possibly be better than him?
No one understood one another better than they did. He and A Ying were simply meant to be together.

Fu Ciying thought she and Pei Yao would always be devoted siblings. But one day, she awoke from a dream, though she should have been fast asleep, and felt a warm dampness on her fingertips.
Her elder brother was leaning over her bedside, kissing each of her fingers, desire plain in his eyes.
Thunderstruck and at a loss, she could only hope that the man she loved would soon ask for her hand.
But her feelings were discovered by her elder brother.
Outside the hall, rain poured in torrents. Inside, the candlelight went out. Fu Ciying watched helplessly as Pei Yao, his face dark, slowly approached her.
"A Ying, you're always so naive." Pei Yao lifted her chin, murmuring with a soft laugh. "Do you think I would let you marry someone else?"
"Elder Brother!" she cried in panic. "There's someone I love. Besides, we're siblings."
"Is that so?" He chuckled, rubbing a thumb over her lips. "My younger sister has always been innocent. How could she know what it means to love someone? You must have been deceived by another man."
"We're the two people closest to each other in this world."
"I never wanted to be only your elder brother."

1. Both leads are virgins. They are not blood siblings. A gentle, resilient, somewhat oblivious heroine faces a scheming, possessive hero. A healing, sweet little romance.
2. The leads are not related by blood and have never been listed on the same imperial genealogy. Everyone knows this.
3. A self-indulgent work written for my own enjoyment.
